For any fan of baseball, it's a thrill when Major League baseball trots out legends for a ceremony. I remember watching on TV when the Fenway Park hosted the All-Star Game and Ted Williams was brought on the field for a pregame ceremony. The Dodgers, celebrating their 50th season in Los Angeles held a pregame ceremony that brought goosebumps. But as they brought on the field players as diverse as Duke Snider, Fernando Valenzuela and Don Newcombe, I felt there was something missing. Knowing Sandy Koufax has rarely been seen at Dodger Stadium, I turned to the Dodgers media rep standing next to me and said, "It would be amazing if you guys brought out Koufax." He said, "Just wait." Koufax was the final Dodger legend to walk out. It was the perfect touch to a perfect ceremony. Koufax received a huge round of applause then threw out the ceremonial first pitch with Carl Erskine and Newcombe.

The Brooklyn Bridegrooms won the 1889 American Association pennant and were subsequently crushed by the National League champions, the New York Giants in the World Series. The next year, they moved to the National League and won its pennant. However, the American Association winners, the Louisville Colonels played several games with them and there was no tie-breaker in the World Series. Incidentally, in that connection, the Boston Reds won the pennant of the Players League, but nobody paid any attention to them. Both the Players League and the American Association disbanded. However, the Bridegrooms changed their name to the Dodgers and then, moved from Brooklyn to Los Angeles. Their number one rival is still the Giants, who incidentally, moved from New York to San Francisco.
