Disaster strikes just before midnight 80 years ago, while most are asleep!
Imagine for a moment as a 78 foot wall of water coming towards you and you had nowhere to go! Some time right before midnight tragedy struck as the St Francis Dam collapsed sending approximately 12 billion gallons of water barreling down the valley. Unfortunately what was estimated to be approximately 400-500 people in it’s path were swept away from the collapse of the St Francis Dam which occurred in 1928. This wall of water went through San Francisquito Canyon along the Santa Clara River all the way out to the Pacific Ocean. Nothing escaped it’s wrath.
This was one of the most serious blows to it’s chief designer William Mulholland. He soon retired after the incident.
Every year a tour is made of the original dam site and every year I miss it for some reason or another. This however is an encore tour and I don’t want to miss it this time especially on the 80th Aniversary!.
