In the midst of Saturday night Web perusal, I saw the unexpected news.
If there is a movie that was an ingrained facet of my life growing up — besides Capra's "It's a Wonderful Life" — it was "The 10 Commandments" — in all of its vibrant, technicolor, Cecille B. DeMille glory.
Who can see a picture of Charlton Heston and not see him as Moses, called to lead the Jews out of captivity?
Sure, there are plenty of other roles he defined.
"Touch of Evil."
"Ben-Hur."
"The Agony and the Ecstasy."
"Planet of the Apes."
Even "Soylent Green" and "The Omega Man."
But to me, he'll always be Moses.
He was of a different era.
I scan the current faces of Hollywood and sometimes feel convinced that the future is bleak. I don't think are many Charlton Hestons on the horizons.
Heston once said, "You can spend a lifetime, and, if you're honest with yourself, never once was your work perfect."
It was not perfect. But it was very well done.
Goodnight, sir.
