On change and fluidity

We live and move in a fluid world. To borrow some of the sage wisdom of Ferris Bueller, "Life goes by pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it." Change is nothing new at 24000 Creekside Road; if anything, it's a hallmark of life. But that still doesn't necessarily prepare you for the exit of a trusted colleague. With the departure of Photo Editor Bryan Kneiding, The Signal has lost a great asset. I had the distinct pleasure of working with and alongside Bryan for the last three-plus years. We covered everything from the mundane to the tragic, and in all of it I saw nothing but professionalism from him. There were many moments on assignment when Bryan would ask a great question of an interviewee that I hadn't thought of. I always valued that. He was more than simply a Signal photographer; he was a consummate photojournalist - dedicated to capturing excellent images, and passionate about the First Amendment rights of journalists. Over nine years in The Signal's service, he also developed a great rapport with the community, particularly those in the public safety realm. What can I really say? Bryan was one of the great ones, and his departure leaves a big hole. But like I said, we're used to change. We've seen a lot of it in the past year. We'll probably see more. But I cling to a hope we'll weather these storms and come out stronger. Better. More tempered. With all that said, here's to you, Mr. Kneiding, a faithful and trusted brother-in-arms in the daily fight to uphold Truth, serve the public interest and do an excellent job. You will be missed.

how the mighty hath fallen?

i love seeing letters to the editor; they're a reminder that someone's reading; a reminder of community. but sometimes, i'm pretty sure we're not all on the same page. every so often i see letters that lament how the once-mighty signal has fallen. we're too liberal. we're too right wing. ...

Farewell to a legend
April 07, 2008
In the midst of Saturday night Web perusal, I saw the unexpected news. If there is a movie that was an ingrained facet of my life growing up — besides Capra's "It's a Wonderful Life" — it was "The 10 Commandments" — in all of its vibrant, technicolor, Cecille B. ...
