During my 17 years with LAPD, and even in my current Reserve status, I do speak occasionally on how to keep safe amongst the predators out there just waiting to pounce.
In the Santa Clarita Valley, we might not have to worry about "crime" as in other places in this country. But for that reason we need to be reminded from time to time that is does happen out here and that we are not immune.
That brings me to the topic of "shoulder surfing". We all go to the grocery store from time to time, or Walmart, Target, Macy's, you name it we go out and spend money in and around the Communities that compose Santa Clarita Valley.
In doing so, just remember to keep your information shielded from the others that are near you, either in line or attempting to get help at the counter. It is easy, and people make a living, from identify theft and memorizing numbers, addresses, and your personal information to use against you from the comfort of their lair.
Shoulder surfing is kind of a kin to pick pocketing, without the physical contact. When you open your wallet to write a check, or pass a credit card, there could be someone that is watching, attempting to memorize your personal information.
Just we weary and keep your guard up. You never know where or when, just make sure it does not happen to you.
