God-Forbid. You are at home and there is a knock at the door. Or you are asleep and hear some movement in a place in home where no one should be.

All of a sudden you are confronted with someone that wants to harm you or your family. This person might be or might not be armed. Either way if you have not given any thought to this happening, which would cause you to be a bit behind the curve.

The advantage any aggressor has is that of having the first move. Your position is that of being on the Defense. Within law enforcement circles the police officers, highway patrol officers, and deputy Sheriff's on the streets have both defensive and offensive weapons. We were always trained if you have time to choose a weapon system, then the offensive is always the best, including long guns and shot guns. The Defensive weapon is for the unknown threat. An example would be the Law Enforcer's side arm.

Your home can be viewed in the same manner, all I would ask if you go through your home with the following in your mind, at least once. If I were attacked in this room, what could I use as a defensive weapon and how would I use it?

Each and every room should be gone through in this manner. You should think about using throw rugs to cause the aggressor to become off balance. Using pots, pans, knives, chairs, railings, doors, cords, center pieces, valances, curtains, and the other assorted items in your "home" arsenal. Visualize how you might implement these different house hold weapons to best protect yourself and your family.

It is just like practicing the Earthquake drill and the fire drill. Very important. When you practice any of these things just once, the mind being that it is an incredible organ, it can remember and when the SH@$ hits the fan, you will be Ready!!!

BE Safe and watch out for each other!

According to crime stats of the SVC maintained by LASD deputies we have no need for this type of instruction because there has never been a crime committed in the SCV. But some might say that is only because the deputies are not writing police reports or the deputies are illiterate. The only crime committed in the SCV are traffic violations. And those have only been done by civilians because according to SCV crime stats law enforcement personnel either visiting or residing in SCV have never committed a traffic violation of any kind. What has happened to the citizens of this country? They have all become anarchist worshipping the likes of the Charlie Manson and the Anti-Christ.

Paris911,

A few years back we had an incident in which a sheriff was killed by a deranged neighbor (we learned later). I remember the shootout and how helpless I felt in my home and the concern for my family and how to protect them. I never dreamed that something like this would ever happen in our "neighborhood" I remember running around like a chicken without a head looking for something to arm myself with in the event that this lunatic happened to beeline into our home. This is a good reminder that you need to be prepared for the unexpected and yes it can happen even in your neighborhood. Thanks for the tips

Thank You for reminding me of what should be practiced every day if a problem of such nature would happen.

Being combat effective with a firearm is a long and hard journey – that really never ends. It hurts and frustrates a real shortgun shooter. If your hand is not sore after your first few visits, then you are not training – you are just playing around. Anyone in the SCV can find real practical shooting practice at the Piru shooting range. They have awesome facilities and attract the best in the area and some time the world. There a short gun shooter will learn real practical shooting rather then the basic paper targets training. Every weekend they have either the steel challenge, IDPA, USPSA, or some other practice shooting contest. Last month they held the world championship. It was awesome. Merchants from all around came to promote their products. Shooting is a perishable skill so one must shoot 1000 rounds a month to maintain combat effectiveness. This gets expensive so a shooter can convert his larger caliber pistol to a 22 for around $300.00 to $400.00 (depending on the manufacturer). This will allow the shooter to train his third eye without breaking the bank. 1000 rounds of 9mm cost $180.00, while 1000 rounds of 22 costs up to $30.00. The kick that non-shooter speak of in 22 round is immaterial when training extensively. Of course you finish the day with about a 100 round of your larger caliber rounds. Meaning, a minimum 300 rounds per visit to the range, while working & improving your craft not just shooting to be shooting. There are some great/inexpensive timers out there too ($150.00).

See how long it takes you to accurately shoot 5 different targets the size of dinner plates. A real shooter can do it in under 3 seconds. Remember, you are on the range to improve not to play around. When you are training with a short gun shoot like it is a short gun not a long gun. So many people control their breathing, slowing squeeze the trigger on everything they short. For a short gun this is wrong – DEAD WRONG. The short gun wants his trigger pounded. An effective short gun shooter must have strong grip while holding the third eye on the target indicator and pounding on the trigger and then moving on to next steel plate quickly and accurately. From there you modify the training to fit your mission: Mission Dependent. Add to the difficulty by maybe wearing very dark sunglasses to sort of simulate darkness in your home. Just before you shoot look down and shake you head to become disoriented to simulate just waking up. Be creative. Your training should be mission dependent. Also, do a walk through of your home monthly by practicing room clearing and cornering. You will learn a lot about yourself by doing these things. And you will start to really get on the kids to keep the floor clear of their junk.

Make sure you can get to your firearm, cell phone and to your land-line phone all at the same time. Be advised, most home phones can be made inoperative by simply picking up any phone in the house. If the intruder comes in the kitchen or the living room he can pick up any phone he sees and you will not be able to call out from the phone in your bedroom. Stay in your room unless you have children in another room. Never attempt to clear a house alone. You are at a great disadvantage. The intruder is able to establish a hasty ambush. However, you can be a force multiplier. That comes from hours and hours of practice. The practical shooting practice at the steel challenge range and your many simulated house clearing drills. Remember in a shoot out you are usually the safest person in the shoot out. Because the thief has no training and will hit everything expect what he is shooting at. This is why you must shoot fast and accurate before he accidentally shoots someone of your family. Interior walls will not stop any caliber bullet.
However, before you house clear think K9. Got a dog? Use him to locate and flush out the intruder. Then you follow him backing him up with fast and accurate fire. Remember this is last case scenario, but I trust no one with the lives of my children and I hope all Americans feel the same. If police are in route I do not care. I will get to my child at all costs. It is against nature for a father to bury his child.

INDIANAPOLIS — A convicted sex offender died Sunday during a struggle with a father who found the naked man in or near his 17-year-old daughter's bedroom, police said.

Police responding to a call from the city's northwest side about 3:20 a.m. found 64-year-old Robert McNally on the hallway floor with his arm around the neck of 52-year-old David T. Meyers, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
