Mr.
The two presidential candidates were asked for a response to evil and were given four out of the five options.
Obama was like a knight on the chessboard or like Muhammand Ali in the ring. He said everything, except answer the question. The one thing that he did not explain is, why does he like the company of evil men and why does he tolerate his evil associations.
McCain answered the question abruptly, quickly, completely, and directly. He wants to defeat it. The great majority of our presidents would not agree with him.
George Washington believed in negotiation with evil and the result was Jay's Treaty. It was no solution to the evil of impressment.
John Adams contained evil with the Department of the Navy. Our freedom of the seas was defended, but we did not defeat the Directory, which was vile and aggressive.
Thomas Jefferson ignored evil with the Embargo Act.
James Madison tried to defeat evil, but we lost the War of 1812.
The fifth option not offered is to support evil. The greatest evil of all is war and if you support war, then you support evil.
The McCain/Madison option to defeat evil was also used by Franklin Roosevelt in demanding unconditional surrender from the Axis.
However, presidents from Truman to Carter, decided to contain the evil of Communism in the Cold War.
Today, President Bush wants to negotiate with evil and persuade the governments of Iran and North Korea not to play with their nuclear toys.
Often we ignore evil, because it is good for business. For example, we ignore the human rights violations in China, because it would be bad for our economy. In simple terms, we need them.
This blog does not support either of the five options. That is up to you.
Nor does it endorse either presidential candidate. Although the Democratic delegates should be reminded that it is not too late to nominate Hillary, because we cannot win with a candidate, who is unable to answer a simple question, such as this one.
