Mr. Winkler's classroom
Mr.
The other day, we had a little short quiz. I asked my students to give me a definition of "bad." Barry could not answer the question, but he tried. One thing that he did not tell me, was the reason that he enjoys playing with bad kids. For example, his girl friend, Michelle, is rude. When Barry won a contest in school, she said that,"for the first time, since I started going to school, I really like this school." However, this is the same school, that sent Barry's friend Tony to juvenile hall and his other friend, Bill, threatened to blow the school up. Then there is Barry's friend, Jerry, who thinks that he is always right. That kid really hates his community and the society that he is living in. Barry refuses to stop playing with Jerry, even after Jerry set the school flag on fire. According to Louie, another of Barry's friends, they should burn all of the school flags. Johnny, on the other hand, answered that "bad" was wrong-doing and we must fight it. Incidentally, Johnny's girlfriend, Cinderella, is quiet and an excellent student. Sne comes from a good family.
Barry has been in my class for three days and has a lot of adjustment problems. Jonnny has been here for twenty-one days and adjusted phenomenally. You see, Johnny was abused by the kids at his other school. They beat him up pretty bad. He cannnot even raise his arms all the way up due to the physical damage suffered under the hands of the other children.
Yesterday, I tried to discipline Barry and he called me a "racist." Johnny is always polite.
Barry does not do his homework. He says that he is too busy playing. He comes to scnool unprepared without paper, pencils, and books. Johnny is an outstanding student.
When you ask Barry a question, he never answers the question directly, but hops, skips, and jumps around the question. Johnny always answers the question quickly and completely.
Barry wants to change the scnool and the classroom. However, the changes that he wants is going to cost us a lot of money. For example, he wants a swimming school for the school and wants me to buy a bunch of videos for him and the other kids to watch all day. Johnny wants better teachers and newer books. I think Jonhnny is more reasonable.
The first day I met Barry, he said that I was a very angry teacher and he could see that I was bitter about a lot of things. Wnen I tried to connect with him and told him that my brother's wife just had a baby, he said that babies are a punishment from God. Johnny is just sad that many babies die, before they have a chance to grow up.
We had a softball game with the boys against the girls. The boys' team was headed by Barry. Barry's team won, but they cheated. Now, they will play Jonnny's team in the playoffs and Johnny's team are the older boys with maturity and wisdom. I have a feeling Johnny's team will beat Barry's team.
