Take Me To Post Comment Form

for starters, a few comments were made about the lack of capitalization in my opening entry. get used to it. it's an affected writing mannerism for blogs and emails that has helped me balance out the daily responsibility of being a grammar cop. so please, allow me a little indulgence. that said, my real point today is about the city's choice of entertainment for the weekend. capping off the tour of california's arrival in santa clarita valley is a 'rock the bike' rally featuring a concert by the gin blossoms. you remember them, right? the arizona band that had a few very radio-friendly hits about 10 years ago. "hey jealousy" "found out about you" actually, those are probably the only songs most people can name off the top of their head. (i for one, do like them; they had some good hooks, decent instrumentation — even the album they put out in '06 wasn't half bad) i give the city a lot of credit for securing a real band, rather than the cover, er, excuse me ... 'tribute' bands that play in central park every summer. you know, bands with names like "no name streets: a tribute to u2," "black dog: playing the hits of zeppelin," or one of several other similar groups playing songs that were popular (and admittedly still are) 20 to 30 years ago. so, what's better? a real band, playing their own songs, despite the fact that it's a bit after their prime? or musicians playing songs made famous by someone else a long time ago? would you rather see the real, (purportedly) live keith richards playing with the 2008 version of the strolling bones? or some young no-name dude copping the style of keith circa '67? (i could care less either way) one co-worker said he'd rather hear fake rod stewart sing this weekend than the gin blossoms. me, i vote for a band that's still keeping at it and playing their own stuff. anyone care to weigh in?

Sorry Josh. I fall into both camps.

I missed the 80's night concert in the park this past Summer and was bummed! If a band plays a song I like, well, I'll be listening (and singing).

At the same time, there's nothing better than listening to the original, though a bit outdated.

DEAR JOSH, I ALSO AM TAKING TIME OFF FROM BEING A "GRAMMAR COP" BUT THOUGHT I WOULD WRITE IN ALL CAPS, SO AS NOT TO BE A COPYCAT.

"HEY JEALOUSY" AND "FOUND OUT ABOUT YOU" SOUND LIKE AWESOME SONGS. IN FACT, WERE I TO SPEND AN EVENING LISTENING TO LIVE MUSIC IN CENTRAL PARK, I COULD ONLY HOPE FOR A BAND OF SUCH OBVIOUS CALIBER.

THE ONLY THING BETTER WOULD BE A GIN BLOSSOMS TRIBUTE BAND. MAYBE THEY COULD BE CALLED "HEY FANS: WE FOUND OUT ABOUT YOU"

Anyone who would prefer a poser band to a real band is probably clueless, or without taste, when it comes to music.
At the same time, seeing a band past its prime can be soul-crushing for a true fan. Let's hope Gin Blossoms deliver, and we don't get too soaked if it rains.

why doesn't the city take a chance on a up and coming band...

if someone did some research, i'm sure there are dozens of appropriate bands that would love to play at an event like, the one that was canceled on saturday nite...

i wouldn't think the gin blossoms would be a big enough draw, i mean i don't believe people would go just to hear them. if folks were going, they would go anyway, is what i'm trying to say. so why not pick and up and coming group...

If you pay attention to The Signal's Web site, you've likely noticed over the last several weeks that I've joined Escape Editor Greg Eichelberger in doing a weekly movie review. On the one hand, I enjoy it because it affords me the chance to escape the newsroom grind, and banter about ...

On change and fluidity

We live and move in a fluid world. To borrow some of the sage wisdom of Ferris Bueller, "Life goes by pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it." Change is nothing new at 24000 Creekside Road; if anything, it's a ...

Farewell to a legend

In the midst of Saturday night Web perusal, I saw the unexpected news. If there is a movie that was an ingrained facet of my life growing up — besides Capra's "It's a Wonderful Life" — it was "The 10 Commandments" — in all of its vibrant, technicolor, Cecille B. ...
