What’s Age Got To Do With It? Living Your Happiest and Healthiest, by Robin McGraw, started slow. Since I made a commitment to Thomas Nelson to read all their titles cover to cover regardless of my opinion, I began to think I had made a mistake. But I’m glad I stuck with it because What’s Age Got To Do With It is an inspiring book.
This is not your average medical journal kind of diet book. What’s Age Got To Do With It is more along the lines of a first-hand conversation between the reader and author.
My initial dislike for this book was rooted in my extreme fatigue when dealing with the subject of exercise. Now I am no stranger to exercise as I ballet danced formally for 10 years, was a four-mile-a-day runner, long-distance ten-speed bike rider and taught aerobics for Jack La Lanne.
Remember him? I remember ol’ Jack from the time I was a tot in the 1960s as my mother would exercise alongside his television show with me mimicking his movements beside her. Of course it was natural for me to grow up and become his advanced runner’s aerobics teacher for three years.
Actually, I loved it. Biking too. Loved long distance biking.
But honestly, at the age of 44 years, I’m pooped!
Exercise, exercise, exercise. The thought of that lifetime of exercise is just … well … tiring.
Unfortunately for me, the topic of exercise was McGraw’s first chapter. Blah…Blah… Blah…and I’m thinking Jane Fonda…Olivia Newton John….sweating like a dog…Lordy…I’m…sick…of…exercise.
Where’s Richard Simmons to get you motivated when you need him?
Shame on me.
Thankfully, McGraw’s honest revealing of her own personality is what drew me to look forward to climbing in my big warm bed with my nighttime cup of coffee and reading her story. I learned that she was very much like me. Imperfect. Boy. I like imperfect people.
So I read and read and read and she talked to me about all kinds of things regarding aging that I never considered.
Now I am not impressed by the Hollywood types with their dermatologists and weekly facials and hundreds of dollars spent on the vane pursuit of the Fountain of Youth. While McGraw does have a certain “richy-rich” experience in her current lifestyle to lend to this book, she grew up terribly poor and has a deep understanding of approaching life on a sincere, genuine level that reminded me of someone I’d like to know someday.
She convinced me that she was as human as I was, and by the time I got done reading about diet, my hormones and my faith I really liked this book.
Kudos, Robin. After the skin chapter I ran into my bathroom and began power-exfoliating. I’m so clean I learned I’m actually a white person. Just joking.
Forgive my exercise ranting. I really think your book has great positive energy and every woman should grab a copy, crawl into their nice warm bed with their favorite drink and read it.
The only thing I might change is the title. How about Why Does Exercise Always Have Something To Do With It?
