The Community Hiking Club and Placerita Volunteers are sponsoring a wonderful program by Dr. Gregory Nishiyama from College of the Canyons. Dr. Nishiyama has researched Sea Sponges and local habitat, and will be giving a lecture and slide show on March 15, 2008 at 8:30 AM at Hart Park in the Bunkhouse. He is calling his talk "The Joys and Horrors of Conducting Research." Dr. Nishiyama gained his first research experience in the field of micro-evolution. In addition to degrees in Biology, he has degrees in Chemistry, chemical ecology, mathematical modeling of temperate marine intertidal habitats, and philosophy. He has also researched anti-smoking and cancer, the biomechanics of sponges, vertical migration and the ecology of rocky intertidal marine invertebrates, conservation biology, and the potential negative effect on wildlife of new construction in Orange County. He also developed a non-pesticide technique to eliminate moth pests from fruit groves. Greg has discovered new sponge species, two of which he described and named. We are lucky to have Gregory teaching at college of the Canyons where he is teaching Biology and is the Biology Club Advisor.
